According to the immigration legislation of Latvia, in order to obtain a passport, the applicant must legally reside in the country for 10 years and obtain citizenship. Latvian government offers foreigners an accelerated option to receive residency status in return for financial investments in the country's economy. Upon expiration of the mandatory period, the investor receives a Citizenship certificate, after which a Latvian passport is granted for a period of 10 years. Latvian passport is issued on the basis of the Citizenship certificate. According to the legislation, to obtain citizenship of Latvia, the applicant has to reside in the country for 5 years with a temporary residence permit and 5 years with a permanent residence permit. Also, each applicant for citizenship must be over the age of 18, provide health certificate and have no criminal records, pay government fees and confirm legal source of invested funds.
The Latvian program offers to invest in the subordinated capital of credit institutions in the amount of € 280,000, in the fixed capital of a new or existing enterprises in Latvia – € 50,000 with up to 50 employees and annual turnover up to € 10,000,000 or € 100,000 with more than 50 employees and annual turnover up to € 10,000,000. There are also options for the purchase of non-interest-bearing bonds or real estate in Latvia worth from € 250,000.
In case if all investment conditions and requirements for residence are completed, the applicant is issued a Citizenship certificate. On the basis of this document, a Latvian passport is granted. The spouse and minor children can also become citizens of Latvia together with the investor.
