The process of acquiring Bulgarian citizenship by investment is ensured by the Bulgaria Immigrant Investor Program and is regulated at the legislative level by article 14 A of Citizenship Law of Bulgaria and by Investment Promotion Act. According to the amendments that entered into force on January 1, 2019, the list of investment options was updated without the possibility to combine them and time limits of passports issuance have been reduced. In accordance with the latest amendments to Investment Promotion Act, applicant does not need to take a language exam and renounce his first passport when applying for Bulgarian citizenship.

1 Selection of investment option and preparation of documents

The process of obtaining Bulgarian citizenship by investment starts with analysis of the conditions and requirements for obtaining the right to invest. It is necessary to confirm reliability, a source of the constant income and to pay the state fees. After submitting the application, information is passed on to the Bulgarian Ministry of Finance, which provides the investment certificate.
2 Investing the funds and obtaining a permanent residence card
Permanent residence registration: 3-6 months.
The certificate issued by the Ministry grants the right to apply for national D visa. Upon receipt of a permit to enter Bulgaria, you are granted the right to submit documents to Bulgarian Immigration Service for a permanent residence. At this stage, a financial contribution is made according to the selected investment option.
3 Interview and applying for the EU passport
Obtaining citizenship: 1-2 years.
Obtaining of the Bulgaria citizen status becomes possible after 5 years of residence in the country or a year after receiving permanent residence by means of accelerated procedure. The procedure involves personal presence at the interview with an authorized representative of immigration service. Decision to grant Bulgarian citizenship by investment is being issued for a period of up to 12 months. The certificate is the basis to apply for domestic and foreign passports of Bulgaria.
